  • We’re back with Megan VanMeter - if you haven’t listened to part 1 I highly recommend going and listening because it’s a packed episode
  • Megan begins with naming the crux of the issue - that helping professionals live the life they’re told they should want through their conditioning and when that doesn’t lead to happiness and fulfillment they feel shame
  • I share how this relates to what I see as the therapist stages of career change - stage one I call It’s Not You It’s Me (where the professional hasn’t yet realized the broken system is at the route of the unfulfillment and so are still trying really hard to fit into it)
  • We go into the second mic drop concept Megan brought up in our email exchange: “unmasking the self-care unicorn for the systemic oppression tool it is”
  • Megan explains her views on self-care and the challenges given the trauma-exposure response and how we need to go beyond self-care. She recommends a book written by a Colleague of hers named Lisa Hines entitled “Beyond Self-Care For Helping Professionals” and it integrates the dimensions of information processing, and how the book takes people on a journey. But the key is that to change your output you need to change your input
  • We discuss habituation and how it relates to self-care and falling into despair
  • Megan speaks to what she does in her work and the path that she’s offering that’s the antidote to burnout and robo-life
  • Megan explains what mental health revolution means to her and she explains it’s at the individual level and that individuals join together to make a larger change and relates to needs, and challenging the messaging they’ve been on the receiving end of most of their lives
  • Megan walks us through her unique journey into private practice out of agency work
  • She leaves us with a moving message!
  • you can learn more about how Megan works with helping professionals and the important work she’s doing in the world: her website and LinkedIn profile.

Thanks for listening!

About the Podcast

Therapist Expanded
Reaching past industry conditioning to the source of our creative power
Host Erin Gibb is a therapist, clinical supervisor, group practice owner, Therapist Fulfillment Coach, and early adopter of the weird and wonderful.

Through interviews with relatable guests, controversial outside-the-box thinkers, solo episodes, and coaching demos, you'll see how therapists are uniquely conditioned for fear, responsibility and unfulfillment. Therapist Expanded then points the way to reaching past industry constraints to the source of our creative power, because when we therapists dare to live our deepest dreams, we start a mental health revolution.

Wondering how living your core desires freely and fully could start a mental health revolution? Well as Carl Jung said, we'll only take our clients as far as we've gone, and your host has seen the incredible growth of those surrounding a therapist when they courageously dream outside of their conditioning.

So are you curious yet? Join us and let's expand together and watch our field grow!
