Here are the steps to deciding who you want to be in 2023:
Steps:
- Make change at the Identity level - not about the outcomes, and focus on the process everyday in order to internalize the identity by watching what you’re doing and the choices you make. I share a personal story of focusing on outcomes to lose 65 pounds only to gain back 70. Focusing on identity level change will make the change more lasting and help when willpower runs out. Checkout my past podcast episode entitled 5 Questions to Move You Closer to Who You Want to Be, where I speak more about the day to day choices that relate to this.
- Where are you creating from? - where are you going to create your identity from? This is not how we’re taught to set goals or resolutions. Our culture is so focused on the outcome and how we’re getting to it, but it’s ultimately a desire or feeling or need that we create from always - it’s just not usually conscious. I share several examples to illustrate this key concept in creation. Here’s a coaching podcast episode where I show the process of arriving at the place we want to create from: Coaching: Undoing Aloneness with Julia Rushlow. I also share about the free activation I’ll be hosting in the spring where I’ll walk you through this process in detail - you can join my Monday MINDUPS list to be in the know when that goes live.
- What is the desired identity? I expand on some of the examples I’ve given to help creating the identity become clearer.
- Rehearsal: Actors and athletes use it because it works. Also 90% of our inner processes and behaviours are unconscious , so to not let old conditioning (especially of stress) hijack each day, the research shows the first 30 minutes shapes the day and that 86% of people in western world reach for cell as soon as they wake up, and that’s the known and reminds of who have been and the familiar emotions there (especially of stress).
I share my cue card strategy for the first moments upon waking to remind myself of the identity I am embodying and where I’m creating from. This is so important for the reasons above, but also because the first few moments when we wake up we’re in the doorway between the conscious and subconscious mind (our brain waves are different than normal waking life) and that doorway is wide open because sleep suppresses the analytical mind, so we are highly programmable.
I share a study about the four groups and piano learning and make the case that rehearsal is so important so we don’t randomly do things and hope for change or sleepwalk through life - instead we become who we want to be and create from our deepest desires.
Thanks For listening!
